The Chief Selector of the BCCI, Ajit Agarkar, has done well in the ICC events. Under his tenure, the Indian team has managed to lift three ICC titles in consecutive years. Now with his tenure ending in June, he seeks an extension till the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI Chief Selector, will have his tenure come to an end in June 2026. He started serving at this position in July 2023, right before the Asia Cup and World Cup. And since then, the Indian team has done pretty well in the white-ball tournaments, establishing its dominance at a global stage.

With him at the post, India has been able to win three consecutive ICC titles. This includes the T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025, and T20 World Cup 2026. Moreover, the team finished as runner-up in the 2023 World Cup and won the Asia Cup, which took place during this phase.

Now, with his tenure coming to an end, . This topic has been in discussion lately, as there seems to be no possible successor for Agarkar at this post. It remains to be seen what decision is taken by the BCCI, and whether Agarkar will be staying at his post or someone else will be taking charge.

Our Take

While the Indian team has done well in the white-ball format, it has also struggled in the Test format. This could be , as the Indian team has suffered some major test losses lately. And these losses also came with Agarkar as the Chief Selector of the team. It all started when India lost the home series against New Zealand.

Following this, the team also went on to lose the Test series against Australia (away) and South Africa (home). If the BCCI wants the transition phase to end quickly, they will also be taking some crucial decisions regarding Agarkar’s availability in the future. Since the 2023 World Test Championship final, India has not managed to secure any big series wins.
